Rajesh Kumar Reveals The Story Behind His Saiyaara Casting
Breaking his silence for the first time on being cast as Aneet Padda’s father in Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara, Rajesh Kumar shared exclusively, “So, ek phone aaya tha Yash Raj Films se. They wanted to see it on the tape. There is another word which we use today instead of audition. It is ‘we want to see it on tape.’ So, I went and performed, and all those things happened. And within two to three days, confirmation aa gaya ki you have been selected for this role. Aur Mohit Suri ji se aapki meeting karwani hai. I said okay. So, do-teen din ke baad, I reached, and I met Mohit.”
The actor continued,” And Mohit said, ‘Sir, you know aapki casting kaise hui?’ Maine kaha, ‘Kuch nahi, audition ke liye phone aaya tha, audition de diya.‘ Woh bola, ‘Nahi. You were having lunch with your wife in one of the restaurants.’ Maine kaha haan, kuch ek hafte pehle hum log gaye the, main aur meri wife, around 2:30–3:00 baje dopahar ko we were having lunch.”
Rajesh added,” He said, ‘Ek table pe hum log recce karke aaye the. We were also having lunch.’ Aur usi time apparently Yash Raj casting team se Mohit ko call gaya tha. They said, ‘There is this actor Rajesh Kumar, should we audition him for Aneet’s (Padda) father?’ He said, ‘Yeah, do it. Do you know him?’ He said, ‘I can see him sitting right in front of me.’ Toh bole ki, ‘Haan, toh kya lag raha hai?’ Bola, ‘Yeh perfect hai. Yahi chahiye.’ So, on the tape was just a formality. Actually, casting restaurant mein khana khate hue hi ho gayi . Ek family ka feel dikha aur wahi pe final ho gaya.”
Rajesh Kumar Dismisses Allegations Of Staged Saiyaara Theatre Reactions
Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara had left audiences captivated with its intense romantic appeal on its release. The film was loved for reviving the charm of old-school love stories. As the film continued to receive overwhelming appreciation, several videos and pictures from theatres had surfaced. The multimedia showed young viewers getting emotional and breaking down in tears. When asked about rumours suggesting that audiences were paid to react this way, Rajesh Kumar responded, “In fact, a very senior journalist had also asked me. Bahut bade critic hai aur journalist hai. Unhone bhi poocha tha mujhse ki, ‘It is being said that videos of audiences getting emotional during the screening of Saiyaara are doctored, your reaction?’ And I remember maine jawab achha likha tha. So he said, ‘I agree.’”
Revealing his answer, he continued,” I said ki, ‘The tree laden with ripe fruits gets a lot of stones.’ I don’t think YRF needs to stoop to all these kinds of gimmicks. As a result, it is already showing that the film is a blockbuster. I feel those kids who are making these videos are in search of instant reel fame. And they are trying to be creative in their own right.’ That was my answer, which I stick by.”
