Forget delicate linework and technicolor sleeves — several celebrities are rocking a bold new trend that is turning body art into skin-deep reinvention.

Blackout tattoos are being embraced by Machine Gun Kelly, Kat Von D and more stars, who traded in vibrant, detailed ink for dramatic solid black panels.

“My whole body has been covered for a long time, and I just wanted to redesign what the human skin could look like, so I came up with, well I didn’t, but a friend of mine named Roxx came up with this,” MGK shared during an appearance on the The Jennifer Hudson Show on September 18, revealing that he opted out of anesthesia or numbing agents.

Kat Von D, for her part, has been going through her own transformation, detailing the start of her process in October 2023, which consisted of 17 sessions, and almost 40 accumulative hours in the chair.

The celebrity tattoo artist and musician shared at the time that she was almost 80 percent done with “blacking out my body.”
