Sunil Lahri, who portrayed Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic Ramayan, has shared his thoughts on the appearance of Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama. The teaser for Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation of Ramayana was released on Thursday, offering the first official glimpse of Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Lord Rama. While many viewers praised the teaser for its grandeur and ambitious scale, it also drew criticism for its visuals and VFX. Additionally, some were sceptical about Ranbir’s casting as Lord Rama, including Sunil Lahri.

Sunil Lahiri Feels Ranbir Kapoor Lacks Innocence To Play Lord Rama In Ramayana

In an interview with DNA, Sunil Lahri chose not to criticise the VFX, calling it just a showcase, but said, “there are some factors that irked me.” Lahri, who played Lakshman in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan—which aired on Doordarshan from 1987 to 1988 and remains one of the most-watched Indian TV shows ever—shared his views on Ranbir’s look as Lord Vishnu’s incarnation. “Ranbir looks okay, but the innocence is a little less. The patience, calm, and innocence that Arun (Govil) had are missing here. Still, I’m sure he’ll do justice to the role with his acting,” he said.

Many have wondered how Ranbir will portray the calm and composed Lord Rama after his intense, action-packed performance in Animal, his latest major film. Lahri echoed this sentiment, adding, “He looks a little harsh; he might suit roles like Laxman or Bharat better. For such a divine role, it’s usually better to cast a fresh face — a new actor without any baggage or controversy is often the ideal choice.”

About Ramayana

The Ramayana film is a monumental project with a budget of Rs 4000 crore, making it the most expensive Indian film ever produced and one of the priciest productions worldwide. The film features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The teaser focused mainly on Lord Rama, with brief glimpses of other characters, including Lakshman and Sita. It also showed Yash’s Ravana emerging from his legendary flying chariot, the Pushpak Vimana.

Ramayana Part One, produced by Namit Malhotra, is scheduled to release in theatres in Diwali 2026, with the second part set for 2027.
