Veteran actor Pankaj Tripathi has publicly backed singer Arijit Singh after the latter’s surprising announcement that he is stepping away from playback singing. Speaking to NDTV, Tripathi highlighted the emotional and creative toll that continuous work can take on artists and explained why Arijit’s decision resonates with many within the creative community.
Pankaj Tripathi Supports Arijit Singh
Pankaj Tripathi stressed that for artists, slowing down can be a necessary part of evolving and staying true to their craft. “You need a break to reinvent yourself. It’s important to take frequent breaks or slow down, as being an artist is a demanding job,” he said, adding, “We are not factory products.” He pointed out that, unlike manufactured goods, artists pour their innermost energy into their work and that constant pressure can eventually wear down even the most dedicated performers.
The Mirzapur actor added, “We aren’t like those 1,000 copies of matchboxes that a factory produces every day. We are artists, not products… Bahut bhaag-daud hai (There’s a lot of running around). Every actor has to struggle and sacrifice a lot to reach where they are today. You should be excited to go on set. And the motivation for that excitement keeps changing again and again.”
Arijit Singh’s Career And Decision To Quit Playback Singing
Arijit Singh’s announcement sent shockwaves through the music and film industry when he revealed on social media that he would no longer be taking on new playback singing assignments. In his message, shared at the start of 2026, he thanked fans for their unwavering support over the years and described his journey as “a wonderful journey,” while confirming that his days recording Bollywood songs were coming to an end.
In an accompanying note on his personal X (formerly Twitter) account, the singer explained that his decision was not impulsive but the result of long reflection. He said that at times he felt weary and creatively restless, noting that he often changes arrangements of his songs when performing them live because he needs new musical stimulation. He also expressed excitement about hearing new singers emerge to inspire him.
Despite stepping away from playback singing, Arijit made it clear that he isn’t retiring from music altogether. He plans to continue making his own music, explore Indian classical roots, and honour existing commitments, assuring fans that some of his songs may still be released later in the year.
Bollywood Supports Arijit Singh’s Decision
Many artists and industry veterans have rallied around Arijit Singh since his announcement, offering understanding and encouragement. Lucky Ali backed Arijit’s choice, saying that if he took such a step, it was because something must have snapped within him. Palash Sen shared an empathetic take on why artists sometimes need to step back, reflecting on the pressures creatives face.
Arijit Singh’s decision to step away from Bollywood playback singing has reignited the conversation around artistic burnout and industry demands. With respected names like Pankaj Tripathi and Lucky Ali publicly supporting his choice, it’s clear that many in the creative world empathise with his need for a shift. While the music business can be draining, artists like Arijit remind us that choosing one’s path, even if it means stepping back, can also lead to renewal and fresh inspiration. The industry may feel the absence of his iconic voice in film tracks, but his evolution as a musician promises new chapters worth following.
