Prakash Raj has often found himself at the centre of public debates due to his outspoken views on social and political issues. Now, the actor has sparked fresh controversy over his remarks on the Ramayana, made earlier this year at the Kerala Literature Festival. His comments, which resurfaced recently, have drawn sharp reactions and led to a formal complaint alleging that he hurt religious sentiments.

The controversy stems from a speech Prakash Raj delivered in January, where he recounted a reinterpretation of the Ramayana performed by a children’s theatre group during a creative workshop. In this version, Lord Rama and Lakshman were portrayed as travellers from the North who entered Ravana’s garden in the South and ate fruits out of hunger.

While narrating the story, Raj described how Lakshman asked Rama if they could eat fruits from a forest ahead. Rama reportedly replied that it belonged to someone else but allowed it due to their hunger. Raj then continued the narration, explaining how Shurpanakha and Ravana confronted them. According to the retelling, Ravana allowed them to eat, acknowledging their hunger, and later asked them to compensate or plant seeds in return.

Raj also added that Rama initially assumed Ravana and Shurpanakha were tribals, while Ravana asserted ownership of the land. Through this narration, Raj appeared to highlight themes of ownership, cultural identity, and regional perspectives.

Complaint Filed Against Prakash Raj For Hurting Hindu Religious Sentiments

However, the remarks triggered strong backlash. Many interpreted his comments as a critique tied to the North-South cultural debate, especially after he reportedly added that people from the North should come to the South to work but avoid imposing ideas like “one nation, one election.”

Subsequently, Advocate Amita Sachdeva filed a complaint on April 16, accusing Raj of “deliberately malicious acts” that outraged Hindu religious sentiments. In her statement, she described herself as a devout Hindu and said the remarks deeply hurt her beliefs. She also asserted that such statements should not be tolerated.

Following the controversy, social media reactions intensified. Some users demanded Raj’s removal from upcoming projects, including his reported role as Lord Shiva in Varanasi. Others called for boycotts of his work, further amplifying the debate.

Overall, the incident once again places Prakash Raj at the intersection of art, interpretation, and public sentiment. While reinterpretations of epics often spark discussion, this episode highlights how such narratives can quickly turn into larger cultural and political flashpoints in today’s environment.
