Rani Mukerji was visibly emotional as she reflected on the time when she was told that her voice was not suitable for her role in Ghulam, and that it would need to be dubbed. Marking her 30th anniversary in the film industry, Rani recently sat down with filmmaker and close friend Karan Johar for an insightful conversation about her career journey. During the discussion, she became emotional, recalling how Karan had supported her decision to use her own voice in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, without hesitation.

Rani Mukerji BREAKS DOWN Recalling Ghulam Makers Dubbing Her Voice

Rani shared that during the filming of Ghulam, Aamir Khan explained to her that her voice was ‘not apt’ for the character, and someone else would be dubbing it. She admitted that this was upsetting for her but emphasised the importance of professionalism and team spirit. The actress said, “I could not show that I was upset because you need to be a team player when you are part of the film… Even if there are personal disappointments, it doesn’t matter if the intent is genuine for the film.”

Expressing her gratitude, Rani said, “I really owe this to Karan. When we were shooting the trailer for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I remember you asked me if I had dubbed my own voice in my first film and if I had any issues with it. I said no, I did dub my voice. You told me, ‘I love your voice!’ and I still remember that. Thanks to you, Karan, I was able to retain my own voice.”

Karan responded by kissing her and acknowledging that her distinctive voice is an integral part of her legacy as an actress.

What Happened?

For context, Rani’s voice was dubbed by Mona Ghosh Shetty in Ghulam, which was directed by Vikram Bhatt and released in 1998. Later that year, Karan Johar used Rani’s real voice in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which became a major box office hit and helped audiences recognise her authentic voice.
