Shelved for over two decades, The Last Tenant has finally found its audience. The film, starring a young Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan, quietly premiered on YouTube on the late actor’s sixth death anniversary. Shot nearly 25 years ago, the project offers a rare glimpse into the early days of two performers who later redefined acting in Indian cinema.

Irrfan Khan, Vidya Balan’s Shelved Film The Last Tenant Releases On YouTube

Written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta, the film also marks his directorial debut. It was produced by Neena and Sarthak Dasgupta at a time when independent filmmaking had limited resources and visibility. Notably, The Last Tenant stands as the only on-screen collaboration between Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan, adding to its archival value.

Speaking about the release, Vidya Balan shared, “It feels surreal to see The Last Tenant finally reach audiences. I was just starting out, trying to find my footing…Working with Irrfan was incredibly special then and that much more now considering its the only time I got to share screen space with him. This film is a beautiful reminder of where it all began for me, and I’m glad it is being shared as a tribute to him.”

The release holds special significance for Vidya Balan’s career as well. It is believed to be among her earliest film projects after her television stint. After remaining unseen for decades, the film finally premiered on April 29 as a tribute to Irrfan Khan. As a result, it brings back a forgotten chapter of Indian cinema and introduces it to a new generation of viewers.

Why The Last Tenant Was Shelved

The film remained unreleased for years due to an unexpected setback. Its original footage was lost, leaving the project incomplete and forcing it into limbo. Over time, hope for its release faded.

However, things changed when Sarthak Dasgupta managed to recover a VHS copy of the film. This discovery made restoration possible. Reflecting on the journey, he said, “I was a novice with everything to learn. I hadn’t assisted anyone. I hadn’t been to film school. There was no Amazon to order books from. No YouTube to watch tutorials on. Fuelled by pure intuition, I had embarked on a journey, still unsure if it could become a career. Releasing this film now, as a tribute to Irrfan, makes it even more emotional. It feels like revisiting a forgotten dream.” His words underline both the struggle and emotional weight behind finally sharing the film.

About The Last Tenant

Now available globally, the film offers a simple yet haunting narrative. It follows a broken musician who takes refuge in an abandoned house before leaving the country. As the story unfolds, memory and reality begin to blur. The film builds its mood through silence, music, and introspection rather than spectacle. Despite its raw production, the performances stand out. Irrfan Khan’s understated intensity is already visible, while Vidya Balan shows early signs of her strong screen presence.

Made around 2000 with minimal resources, the film reflects passion over polish. It also features Annu Khandelwal, Saurabh Agarwal, Sabya Saachi, Satish Kalra, and Anand Mishra in key roles. Within days of its release, it attracted close to two lakh views on YouTube, showing strong audience curiosity.

The Last Tenant is more than just an old film released late. It acts as a time capsule. It captures the beginnings of two iconic actors and honours Irrfan Khan’s enduring legacy.
