Veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani has opened up about his ongoing legal and professional dispute involving filmmaker David Dhawan and music label Tips Industries. The controversy surrounds the upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, starring Varun Dhawan, alongside allegations related to the recreation of the iconic song Chunari Chunari from Biwi No. 1. In a recent virtual press conference, Bhagnani also revisited the financial losses he claims to have suffered from Coolie No. 1 (2020) and expressed disappointment over strained industry relationships.

Vashu Bhagnani Slams David Dhawan Over Rs 27 Cr Loss On Coolie No 1

Speaking at the press meet, Vashu Bhagnani said, “Very honestly, after this case, there is some bitterness in all relationships. But Varun hasn’t called me in 2 years anyway. We made ‘Coolie No. 1’ in 2020 and suffered a loss of INR 27 crore; he never even bothered to ask how I was doing. If he maintains the relationship, fine. If not, that’s fine too. I lost a lot of money being with him. He is like my child, children make mistakes. Father and son, so be it”.

He further expressed emotional distress over the situation and said the dispute has impacted long-standing professional bonds. He said, “My heart is broken. I am not afraid of anyone in this world, not even my father. I am proud that I have never done wrong to anyone. But I am broken because after doing so much, they are making me out to be the thief, the fool. Varun Dhawan is saying these things. David Ji is saying these things. Ramesh Ji too. There is no need for this”.

Bhagnani also claimed that despite earlier discussions and expectations, the collaboration fallout from Coolie No. 1 was never addressed. He added that financial losses from the film still weigh heavily on him. He said, “We had such a good relationship. Even now, I am saying, call them on this call, I will settle it in 10 minutes. But if they don’t want to, how can it be settled? They were so confident until 3 days ago: ‘What can Vashu do to us?’”

Vashu Bhagnani On Challenges He Faced After Coolie No 1

He also revisited the production challenges and alleged losses from Coolie No. 1. “I told David ji that I want to make Biwi No 1. We suffered a loss of around Rs. 27 crores in Coolie No 1 (2020). I was just a namesake producer. It was David ji who 100% handled the production and expenses. I paid David ji big money to make that film; almost Rs. 70 crore, which was not even his worth.”

The dispute further escalated over the use of Chunari Chunari in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. Bhagnani claimed the song was used without proper consent despite prior ownership arrangements with Tips Industries.“We sold the audio rights of Biwi No 1 to Tips at the time of release. Wog log badmaashi karke video chala rahe the. They were not even ready to meet us over this issue. We shared a letter in the court, due to which the court granted us status quo. How can David Dhawan use the same songs from my film in his son’s movie?”

He further added that he would have supported the recreation if he had been informed properly. “At least, he should have called and told me, ‘Vashu ji, main same gaana mere bete ke liye kar raha hoon. I hope you don’t have an objection. Please support.’ I would have given the NOC and would not have minded also.”

Bhagnani also reiterated his disappointment over Coolie No. 1, stating that neither David Dhawan nor Varun Dhawan checked on him after the film’s failure. During the same press conference, he added, “I suffered a loss of Rs. 27 crores in Coolie No 1. Varun never even bothered to check ki uncle ka nuksaan hua hai; kaun poora karega?”

The upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, directed by David Dhawan and featuring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, is currently scheduled for release on June 5, 2026. The legal matter between the parties remains ongoing.

What The Controversy Is About

This controversy centres on a legal and professional dispute between producer Vashu Bhagnani, director David Dhawan, and Tips Industries over the alleged unauthorised use of the song Chunari Chunari in an upcoming film. It also involves Bhagnani’s claims of financial losses from Coolie No. 1 (2020) and strained relationships with the Dhawan family, including actor Varun Dhawan.
