Famous playback singer Kumar Sanu has taken legal action against his ex-wife, Rita Bhattacharya, filing a Rs 30 lakh defamation suit in the Bombay High Court. The singer seeks compensation for the damage caused to his reputation and has demanded the removal of interviews in which Rita allegedly made defamatory claims about him. The case was heard on December 17.
Kumar Sanu Files Defamation Case Against Ex-Wife Rita Bhattacharya
Kumar Sanu and Rita Bhattacharya finalised their divorce in 2001. They share a son, Jaan Kumar Sanu, who participated as a contestant on Bigg Boss 14. Sanu filed the lawsuit through his advocate, Sana Raees Khan. According to the petition, Rita Bhattacharya gave interviews to entertainment platforms such as Viral Bhayani and Film Window, in which she accused Kumar Sanu of mistreating her during pregnancy—claiming he starved her, locked her in the kitchen, and denied her medical care.
She also alleged that he conducted court proceedings while she was expecting, and accused him of having multiple affairs and neglecting his family during their marriage. These interviews went viral on social media in September 2025. In the petition, advocate Sana Raees Khan highlighted that such allegations violate the terms of their divorce settlement, which was recorded before the Bandra Family Court on February 9, 2001. The agreement included a clause prohibiting either party from making future allegations against the other.
About Defamation Suit
The petition states that Rita Bhattacharya’s statements have caused significant reputational damage and emotional distress to Kumar Sanu. The singer had issued a legal notice on September 27 to his ex-wife and various media outlets, warning them to remove the interviews and threatening criminal action if they failed to do so.
The legal notice emphasised the seriousness of the defamatory remarks, mentioning that Rita claimed Kumar Sanu failed to provide her food during pregnancy, and insulted his family as “ill-mannered” and “uncultured.” It also pointed out that such statements could harm his social standing, professional reputation, and potential business opportunities, leading to substantial financial and reputational losses.
The notice also warned of potential criminal action under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
